Chiropractic: popular techniques

March 5th, 2009

People all over the world are both practicing and benefiting from the practice of chiropractic, a treatment method focused on improving patients’ health and wellness through manual manipulation of the spine. By properly manipulating the spine, practitioners of chiropractic believe they can help restore the body’s ability to heal itself, prevent future ailments and complications, and improve patient mobility. Practitioners of chiropractic employ a number of techniques to help patients achieve the above-mentioned benefits. Listed below is additional detail on two of the more common techniques used in chiropractic today.
Applied Kinesiology. Applied kinesiology focuses on properly aligning bones and muscles through light massage and manipulation of acupressure points. When using the applied kinesiology technique, chiropractors attempt to align a misaligned bone or muscle by adjusting the supporting bones and muscles in the affected area. When performed successfully, applied kinesiology results in restoration of normal muscle functionality.

Motion Palpitation. Perhaps the most common of chiropractic techniques, motion palpitation focuses on properly aligning joints and muscles through the use of sudden, controlled thrusts. The technique is designed to test the range of motion of a particular joint or muscle and return that joint or muscle to its natural position. It is normal for patients undergoing motion palpitation to hear popping and/or cracking sounds in the affected area, which results from gas in the joint capsules being displaced by the sudden movement created by the chiropractor. Though the sound can be unnerving, there are no adverse affects from the technique itself.

In addition to applied kinesiology and motion palpitation, practitioners of chiropractic may also use techniques such as the: Thomson terminal point, Palmer toggle recoil, and Sacro-Occipital, depending on the ailment of the particular patient. Given the breadth of effective techniques, patients should feel free to inquire about the best type of technique for their particular condition.
